Biography
Ali Faryn Margulius creates her pieces “en plein air,” using the outdoors as both her subjective inspiration and as a means of achieving balance. This sense of tranquility is evident in Ali’s art. Her abstract water colours convey the organic, free flowing shapes represented in nature—ocean running against distant land, the lined marks of trees backed by water, sky, and mountain. These are the calm and nourishing spaces in which Ali brings together personal health, self-awareness, and external observation.
Ali realized art’s intimate function through a devastating experience. When she lost her father during her final year of art school, Ali took a break from creating to mourn. To her surprise, it was her return to art that helped her heal. By immersing herself in her art practice, she was able to create through loss, using her work to build a self-understanding that—in a world without her father—felt new.
In the past year, Ali took the risk to step away from her teaching career, and to focus on art full-time. She lives in Vancouver, BC with her husband, and paints in-situ from her favourite West Coast locations: Jericho and Iona beaches, Porteau Cove, Pacific Spirit Park, Boundary Bay, and—most treasured of all—Salt Spring Island.
